The concept of design patterns dates back to the 1970s and from the field of architecture. Christopher Alexander and his team published the groundbreaking A Pattern Language (Oxford University Press) in 1977, which describes architectural patterns for creating towns, buildings, and other construction projects. Sometime later this idea was adopted by the newly formed software industry.

In short, a pattern describes a repeatable solution to a problem.

However, a pattern does more than provide a solution; it is also about forming a language, commonly identifiable concepts, and even building on other established patterns.

Kubernetes has an established set of identifiable concepts and many standard patterns to solve common problems of delivering and operating containerised services.

Verne has leveraged these industry standards introduced from Kubernetes patterns with the aim to shorten deployment time as well as adhering to many known standards such as encryption of data at rest or the side-car pattern.
