The Business Names Register is a public register of business names.
A business name is a name or title under which a person or entity conducts a business. The register of business names allows for name determination, reservation and registration.
Names are able to be ‘owned’ by individuals or companies. A common requirement of a business names register is the need for renewal of the ownership and payment of the associated fee.
The name determinations process may be different within a jurisdiction between the companies register and the business names register. That is to say that different rules may apply for which name is allowable on one or the other. Commonly the business names register will have restrictions on the names that may be used. These restrictions may be based in statute and or registry policy.
